Youth Pilot Program

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development
awarded the South Central TN Workforce Alliance (SCTWA) a $27,000 grant to serve youth through the Youth Work Experience Pilot Program.

The Pilot Program, one of three Summer Youth programs the SCTWA administers, has provided a paid work experience for 15 youth in our area with employers such as Magneti Marelli in Pulaski. The SCTWA provided all wages, payroll and workers compensation for the youth workers for 240 hours.

Da’Shawn Shyes and Katie Keene, both recent high school graduates, were two of the youth selected to participate in the pilot program. “Between the JTG (Jobs for TN Graduates) class I took in high school and this internship, I feel like I really know what working in the real world is going to be like. I also feel like I am much better prepared for it,” stated Da’Shawn.

Katie went on to say that, “since entering this intership I have totally changed the direction of my career. I had thought I would go to school and work in Radiology, but now I really want to work in Human Resources.”

Upon completion of the program, 5 of 15 of the students were offered full-time employment from the employers (Da’Shawn and Katie were among the five).
